What Is SUFIYANA ACETATE?

Cellulose is a natural polymer that forms the structural foundation of the entire plant kingdom. When cellulose reacts with acetic anhydride, it produces Cellulose Acetate. To enhance its physical properties and workability, plasticizers are added to Cellulose Acetate, making it one of the most important raw materials in the production of eyeglasses.

What Makes (M49) In Sufiyana Frames Different?

Mazzucchelli 1849 has stayed ahead of market trends by developing a formula in its laboratories that merges the physical and mechanical properties of the classic formulation with a strong focus on eco-sustainability: M49. The traditional plasticizer has been replaced with a vegetable-based plasticizing solution, transforming M49 into a bioplastic with a significantly high bio-based content.

Referring to a material as "bioplastic" often implies transforming something harmful into something sustainable, which holds true for many products. This term generally ensures that the material meets certain criteria, such as being derived from natural resources or being biodegradable. However, the issue is that even materials made from fossil-based raw materials but capable of biodegradation can also fall under this definition—which doesn't meet our higher standards. In contrast, M49 is both bio-based and biodegradable.

"Others" Definition of BioPlastic:

According to the European Bioplastic Association, bioplastics encompass a variety of material families with distinct properties. They can be categorized into three main groups:

  1. Bio-based or partially bio-based
  2. Biodegradable, even if derived from fossil resources (not bio-based), with the potential to be partially bio-based in the future
  3. Bio-based and biodegradable

Our BioPlastic:

M49 is both bio-based and biodegradable, a combination that sets it apart. It's important to note that not all plastic materials from natural origins are biodegradable, and sometimes plastics derived from fossil sources can be. The key advantage of M49 is that it fulfills both criteria, making it a truly sustainable option.

What Does Bio-Based Mean?

**Bio-based** refers to materials that originate from natural and renewable sources. For instance, cellulose acetate is a polymer derived from wood pulp. The proportion of a product that comes from renewable sources is expressed as a percentage, indicating how much of it is derived from renewable materials versus fossil sources.

The reference test for determining this renewable content is ASTM D6866. This standardized method uses 14C radiocarbon dating to measure the amount of renewable content in solid, liquid, and gaseous samples. The test assesses the percentage of modern carbon (pMC), or organic carbon, derived from biomass. This method distinguishes biomass from carbon derived from fossil fuels, which lacks the 14C isotope.

M49 has undergone this analysis, and it has been found that 68% of its content originates from natural sources.
